What happened to “those” Huskers?

By Blake Sorem

As a youngster I grew up watching the Big Red machine dominate opponents every Saturday morning, and they did it with a certain dominance that was different from other high scoring teams. They ran the option out of the I formation, and all I wanted was to run the option as QB at Nebraska!

They came to town once when I was in my teen years and they dominated our Gophers in a lopsided 44-10 blowout. When I got to high school my dreams of being an option QB were dashed by Mike Grant and his wing T offense in which I would catch some option pitches from the great Jason Kapsner, but it was hardly the focal point of our offense.

The Huskers of the 90’s are arguably the greatest college football teams of all time. The Huskers of today are NOT.  The Blackshirts are gone, the physical style of play is long gone and these Huskers are soft. I like Scott Frost and when he got there, I was excited to see some glimpses of past Husker dominance but what I see is a long road to what was, with a lot of questions about whether or not it can happen.

Saturday night the Minnesota Golden Gophers looked like the more physical squad; I wanna love Gopher football so badly. A win tonight  gets the Gophers to 7-0 with an awful Rutgers team coming next week.

These are my two favorite college football teams, one is on its way up and one seems to be in neutral.  Saturday was a huge game for both programs.
