Twins, Padres swing minor trade

Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have made a trade following the Rule 5 draft. The Twins traded right-handed pitcher Miguel Diaz, whom they selected first overall in the Rule 5 draft, to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitcherJustin Haley and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Haley was selected eighth overall in the Rule 5 draft by the Los Angeles Angels (from the Boston Red Sox organization) and later acquired by the Padres.

Haley split the 2016 season between Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland, where he went 13-10 with a 3.01 ERA (146.2 IP, 49 ER), 45 walks, 126 strikeouts and two complete game shutouts in 27 games (26 starts) and was named to MiLB.com’s organizational All-Star team for Boston.  In five seasons with the Red Sox organization, he went 35-44 with a 3.41 ERA (559.0 IP, 212 ER), 224 walks and 485 strikeouts. The 25-year-old was selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Fresno State.
