Twins make it official; sign Jason Castro to three year deal

Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have signed catcher Jason Castro to a three-year contract worth $24.5 million. Castro will earn $8.5 million in 2017, $8 million in 2018 and $8 million in 2019.

Castro, 29, has played six seasons in the major leagues, all with the Houston Astros, hitting .232 with 114 doubles, 62 home runs, 212 RBI and 215 walks in 617 games.  The Castro Valley, California native appeared in 113 games for the Astros last season, hitting .210 with 11 home runs, 32 RBI and 45 walks.

The left-handed hitting catcher was drafted by Houston in the first round (10th overall) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Stanford University.  He was named to the American League All-Star team in 2013, hitting .276 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI.
