GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (December 19, 2018) — Over the past two years, Minnesota United has built one of the best soccer-specific stadiums in all of North America with a fan-first approach: safe standing for its supporters, optimal sightlines throughout the stadium, fantastic food and drink options with a local twist, and architecture designed to hold noise in and provide an atmosphere that is second-to-none in the Twin Cities. And now it’s official: MNUFC will take the pitch at Allianz Field for the very first time at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 against New York City FC for a game on ESPN.
“This day is going to be the culmination of years of hard work and planning,” said MNUFC CEO Chris Wright. “We cannot wait to share Allianz Field with everyone in Minnesota. We know it will be at the pinnacle of soccer stadiums in North America and will put Midway, St. Paul and Minnesota on the global soccer map. Our home opener will be a truly historic
moment for the club, the fans and the community.”
Minnesota United is 1-1 all time against NYCFC, defeating the New York side 2-1 at home in 2018. Forward Angelo Rodriguez scor ed a first-half brace in that match, tallying his second goal of the evening after picking off a Ben Sweat pass and dribbling around Sean Johnson to slot it into the back of the net. Traveling west, the 2019 season will begin in Vancouver for MNUFC, with the Loons getting things started against the Whitecaps on Saturday, March 2 at 5:00 p.m. The two clubs have faced each other four times these past two seasons, with Vancouver holding a slight edge on Minnesota United, who are 1-2-1 all-time versus the Whitecaps.
