Two games into the 2017 season and the Minnesota Twins are off to their best start in 10 years as they stopped the Royals again today at Target Field 9-1.
THE TWINS defeated the Royals today for their second straight win, and their first 2-0 start to a season since 2007 (started 3-0)…thru two games the Twins have walked 16 times with nine of them coming around to score…the Twins went 12-10 last season when walking six-or-more times, and 4-3 when walking seven-or-more times…the Twins walked nine times in today’s game, the most since walking nine on August 17, 2016 at ATL…the Twins have scored 12 runs in the seventh inning this season.
HECTOR SANTIAGO allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four in 5.0 innings today…it was the fewest runs he has allowed in the first start of a season since May 2, 2013 at TEX when he allowed one run in 5.1 innings…earned his second win at Target Field since joining the Twins, the previous coming September 3, 2016 vs. CWS.
BULLPEN NOTES: TYLER DUFFEY made his first career relief appearance today, tossing a perfect sixth inning to earn his first hold…JUSTIN HALEY made his Major League debut today, tossing a perfect ninth inning…the Twins bullpen has tossed 6.0 scoreless innings with one walk, one hit and six strikeouts in two games.
JASON CASTRO set a career-high by walking four times in today’s game…31st time in Twins history a player has walked four-plus times, the last coming by Jim Thome on July 21, 2010 (4 walks).
MIGUEL SANO (1-for-3) hit his first triple of the season driving in three runs in the seventh inning…it was his third career triple and first since September 23, 2016 vs. SEA…has now collected multiple RBI in three straight games, dating back to the 2016 season finale.
EDUARDO ESCOBAR (2-for-4) collected his first hit of the season with a single in the second inning, scoring Sano for the Twins first run of the game…followed it up with a three-run home run in the seventh inning…was his fourth career three-run home run…has a hit in six straight against the Royals and has hit in 15 of his last 17 against the Royals, batting .365 (23-for-63) in that span.
