Gopher volleyballers win before record crowd
The Minnesota volleyball team (18-2, 7-1) remained at No. 2 in the nation in the latest USA Today poll after wins over Iowa and Illinois.
Washington was the No. 1 team for a third week in a row. It marked the sixth straight week that Minnesota has occupied one of the three spots in the poll. The Golden Gophers are the only team in the nation to have remained in the top five for the entire season. The Gophers swept a three-game match from Iowa on Oct. 13, and won in four games against Illinois in their first match at Williams Arena since 1993. In their match against Illinois, Minnesota set a school-record for attendance at 10,927. The 10,927 fans was also the highest attendance in the nation this year, the second-largest attendance for a Big Ten match in the conferences history and the fifth-largest attendance in NCAA history for a regular-season match that was not part of a "Midnight Madness" promotion.
